Twitter, RSS Feeds, Blogs?!?! What are all these things?!?!

I’ve been getting this comment or a variation of that a lot recently. I’ve started doing some unofficial social media consulting in the San Luis Obispo area where I live and to be honest we are so far behind the curve in terms of new media here. So to help out here are 5 very informative, very simple ways to explain social media topics in plain English.

All these videos are from the good people of Common Craft who make the best explanation videos I have ever watched.

  1. What are blogs? Why are they important?
  2. What are RSS Feeds? How do they help you save time and distribute content faster?
  3. What is “Social Media”? How do all these new media websites fit together in the big picture?
  4. Why is Social Bookmarking, Social? How do you get started with Delicious? What are Tags and how do you use them?
  5. What are social networking sites? Why sites like Facebook and Linkedin so popular? What can social networking sites do for you?
  6. What are photo sharing sites like Flickr? What are Tags for and why are these sites social? How can these sites keep your photos safe?
  7. Finally what is Twitter? I’ve talked about twitter in my previous post: 5 Reasons Why I Use Twitter, but check out this video to see what micro-blogging and twitter is

What videos or websites do you use when trying to explain social media to someone unfamiliar with these tools? Share them in the comments!
